27/07/92 A big HELLO to you!

Hope For Tommorrow

The ending & beginning of a new year was always nothing really special to me, perhaps maybe spending it a few years in a grand hotel with 2 other families, and just hugging/shaking hands to wish one another. But mum came across a newspaper article past few days ago, and it kind of got me thinking abt celebrating the new year. The title of it was, "Have we grown a year older or have we grown up by a year ?"

The author told a story of an 87-year-old woman, Rose, who was determined to pursue a university education. She enrolled into a Uni & due to her bubbly personality + pleasant behaviour, she soon became the campus icon, making friends easily. She was invited for a speech and she said: "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing." There are 4 secrets to staying young, being happy & acheiving success. "You have to laugh & find humour everyday. You must also have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die." Anybody can grow older, it doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. "Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have any regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets."

Rose died 1 week after her graduation and many students paid tribute to the wonderful woman who taught them by example that it is never too late to be all you can possibly be. Rose challenged the people around her to live out the lyrics of The Rose, by Bette Midler. The second verse of the song goes:

" It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance.
It's the dream afraid of of waking tha tnever takes the chance.
It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seems to give.
And the soul afraid of dyin' that never learns to live."

The author said it reminds him to always take the bull by its horns, and live life with passion - passion fuelled by a determination to find opportunity in change. At the end of the article, he wrote, "May next year signal the start of a new journey for you & me, a journey during which we "grow up" more than we "grow old."

Think this is by far the most sensible post I've ever typed, hope to learn from it!
